Scotland is the birthplace of British accounting, with Queen Victoria granting a royal charter to the Institute of Accountants in Edinburgh to create the profession of Chartered Accountant in 1854.
James Milne was among those to emerge as a leading light in what was a bold new era, an early member of the Society of Accountants in Aberdeen which in turn joined with those in Edinburgh and Glasgow to form the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland.
Our partners take pride in a modern and progressive approach, embracing the evolution of software and systems for business and personal finance, while remaining faithful to the values which have stood James Milne in good stead since those formative years in the 19th century.
James Milne began life as a sole trader before growing the firm through the years in a measured way.
Current managing partner Graham Bridgeford became only the 15th partner when he joined in the 1990s.
The world has moved on, but our principles remain reassuringly familiar.
Attention to detail, integrity and commitment to client satisfaction are the foundations upon which generations of accountants at James Milne have built to create one of the most recognised and respected firms in the North East.
Now led by five experienced partners, we serve the region from our offices in Aberdeen, Inverurie and Banchory with a team of 40 working across these locations.
Bon Accord Square has been our city centre home since the 1920s, with the elegant granite buildings, protected by listed building status, designed by the renowned Archibald Simpson, and built a century earlier. Like us, they have stood the test of time.
Although bricks and mortar retain a traditional feel, the firm has changed immeasurably over the past 130 years.
Significantly, in 2008 our acquisition of Cassie & Co. in Inverurie brought two respected names in accountancy together to create a strong offering at the core of James Milne today.
Our Banchory office was opened in 2016 and expanded in 2018 following the acquisition of Williamsons Chartered Accountants
