Lauren frames career success at James Milne

Posted on November 24, 2017

A passion for photography helps a skilled accountant to focus on the books at one of the north-east’s leading chartered accountancy firms.

Lauren Thompson was fascinated with cameras from an early age and when she’s not working at James Milne’s Aberdeen and Banchory offices she spends time on landscape photography and astronomy.

Having initially sampled life at the firm as a summer placement student whilst studying accountancy at the University of Aberdeen, Lauren went on to join the team permanently in 2006 and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2009.

Now a manager with the firm, Lauren has 11 years of experience, where she looks after limited company clients.

Lauren, who lives in Peterculter, said: “Photography has always been a passion and I was interested in cameras and taking pictures from an early age. Landscape photography gives me the chance to explore the north-east and further afield.

“Living in the countryside also gives me a chance to enjoy astronomy which is something my dad and I do together. There’s not much light pollution in the countryside so it’s possible to see the stars more clearly at night – when the weather allows.

“I’ve found that my hobbies offer a different challenge from working as an accountant and the time outdoors helps me to concentrate when I’m in the office and make sure our client accounts are accurate.”

Lauren, who is a keen rugby and shinty fan, puts her accountancy experience to good use by taking the firm’s trainees under her wing as they embark on their own journey in the profession.

She has also recently completed new Continuous Professional Development (CPD) modules around new financial reporting standards and has been learning about the latest accounting software packages.

Lauren said: “New accounting regulations have been introduced recently which has changed how accounts have to be presented. James Milne place a great deal of importance on keeping up with new developments in accountancy and the firm makes sure we get the necessary training to do our jobs effectively.

“Being able to complete new training modules which cover the updates has been very helpful and allows my colleagues and me to offer the best possible advice to our clients.

“It’s becoming increasingly important to keep on top of software developments and we offer support to our clients as they make the switch to online accounting packages.

“The government is expected to roll out a new initiative called ‘Making Tax Digital’ in the future which will have implications for how often businesses must report figures to HMRC. These will have to be done directly from the business’s accounting software.

“Using a digital platform for accounts now will help make the transition easier for clients. The staff at James Milne are well placed to advise on the most effective digital solutions available.”

James Milne Chartered Accountants serves both personal and business clients across a diverse range of industries, from the Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire staples of oil and gas and agriculture through to retail, hospitality, fishing, haulage, trades, construction and many more.

With offices in Aberdeen, Inverurie and Banchory, the firm is led by four experienced partners as part of a team of 30 specialists.
