Claire Murray joins Inverurie team

Tarves born Claire Murray has joined James Milne’s Inverurie team as Business Services Assistant. Joining Gail Soutar and her team, Claire will be providing payroll and bookkeeping services to clients, as well as assisting with year end accounts.

Claire has recently completed a two-year HND in Accounting and Finance and has a host of experience in working in finance in a variety of industries including oil and gas. Claire has also held financial roles in smaller businesses and including her father’s agricultural engineering business.

Having been recruited and started her new position during the pandemic, Claire is yet to meet many of her James Milne colleagues in person, so is looking forward to getting into the Inverurie office once guidelines allow.

Claire said: “It has been strange starting a new job during the pandemic, but luckily the whole team has been really welcoming. Even though we have mostly only met up through video conferencing and telephone calls, I have really settled in well.

“My current office colleagues are my two chihuahuas who can be a little noisy, so I eagerly anticipate the day when we can get back to the office.”

Partner Michael Fotheringham commented: “Claire is a valuable addition to the Business Services Department and brings with her a wealth of experience across different industries.

“It has been a busy time for James Milne as we support businesses facing challenging times. Our staff members have all been working at home, and we understand that that can be difficult for many, and so we truly value their dedication, professionalism and efficiency.

“We all look forward to welcoming Claire to the Inverurie office again in person, when we can all safely get back together.”

Retirement wishes for Inverurie’s Fiona Law

James Milne’s Inverurie office said farewell to Fiona Law at the end of April, after more than 23 years of service.

Fiona Law, who has lived in Inverurie for almost 30 years, has retired from James Milne to spend more time with her family, and especially her young grandson.

Fiona has spent the last two decades working for the firm in a variety of roles. She began working a few hours a week for Cassie & Co before it became part of the James Milne business, to fit in with her young children’s school hours. Gradually, Fiona worked her way up in the firm aided by Hazel Bremner, who has worked with Fiona since the beginning. Hazel encouraged Fiona to join the tax department and Fiona soon became an integral part of the team at James Milne.

Fiona said she will miss her colleagues: “After working together for so long, it will be strange not to see them every day. During the pandemic, when most people worked from home, our team needed to spend some time in the office in order to process physical documents being sent in by clients.”

With her daughter due to return to work after the birth of Fiona’s grandson, Fiona decided it was time to leave the office and spend more time helping to take care of one-year-old Theo.

“This last year has been strange and a shame not to see the whole Inverurie team every day, but we have all managed a very difficult situation really well, and the firm’s partners have been extremely supportive.”

Fiona has seen lots of changes during her 23 years with James Milne, not least a move to a more digital way of working. “The customer portal is increasingly popular, enabling people to organise their business and personal finances easily and safely. Over the last year, more and more people are moving towards digital records, to fall in line with new government regulations, and we have been supporting clients transition from paper records to online accounting.”

James Milne partner Michael Fotheringham commented: “We are very sorry to see Fiona leave, but understand it is the right time for her and her family. We never like to see a valued employee move on but wish her every happiness.

“Fiona has been an integral part of James Milne Chartered Accountants, and her support has been especially welcome during this very difficult past year.

“Sadly, we were not able to have a large celebration due to the current restrictions. However, we hope to catch up with Fiona to give her a good send-off later in the year if things open up this summer.”

Gail Soutar joins as Head of Business Services

James Milne Chartered Accountants is delighted to welcome Gail Soutar to the team, as Head of Business Services at the Inverurie office.

Gail has extensive experience of business financial services, having worked as Finance Manager for James Dun’s House in Aberdeen and Glasgow and for BAA at Aberdeen Airport.

Born in Inverurie, Gail is returning to her home town and is looking forward to working with the team, managing the firm’s bookkeeping service offering, as well as its payroll services.

Gail joined James Milne in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, and so is having to acquaint herself with colleagues and clients by telephone, email and conference call.

She said: “It has been exciting to get to know the James Milne clients and interesting to work with such a diverse range of businesses. The Inverurie office manages bookkeeping and payroll services for individuals and businesses across Aberdeenshire as well as in the city, many of whom have been with the firm a long time.

“I have been putting together monthly and quarterly bookkeeping records for our clients, and I am also working with the payroll team who have been particularly busy helping our clients with the government’s coronavirus business support schemes.

“I have been into the Inverurie office to collect files but look forward to when we can all work together in one place.”

Partner Michael Fotheringham commented: “Gail is a very important new member of our team, and it is a shame that she has begun her time with James Milne in the middle of this pandemic. She and her team have managed very well working at home, maintaining our reputation for excellent service levels despite what is happening in the world around us.

“We are lucky at James Milne to have a very dedicated and experienced team, and Gail’s appointment will only strengthen our business services support for our clients across north-east Scotland.”
